Abendmusik Featuring Jacqueline Horner Kwiatek, mezzo soprano Judson Griffin and Małgorzata Ziemnicka, violin Patricia Ann Neely, Carlene Stober, and Elizabeth Weinfield, viola da gamba Rick Erickson, chamber organ
“In no other period of its musical history has Germany given more cogent proof of its ability to adopt foreign ideas, in the sense of assimilating them, making them its own, reworking them, and finally refashioning its native inheritance by fusing the latter with what it had newly acquired.” – Frederick Blume, “Deutschland,” Musik in Geschichte und Gegenwart.
With politics and religious ethics permeating every facet of life in Germany during the 30 Year’s War (1618-1648), Frederick Blume captures the essence of the times in his quote regarding the region’s quest to develop its own nationalistic musical style.
This concert features the repertoire of Scheidt, Schutz, Buxtehude, Rosenmuller, Hammerschmidt, Schwartzkopf, and Leopoldus I; composers influenced by the continental Europeans. They were masterful artists who weaved the styles of the Italians, French, Spanish, Dutch, and English into their own individual regional styles, ultimately representing the German style, and setting the stage for the next generation of composers, including Bach, Telemann, Gluck, Fasch, et al.
The concert features the mezzo soprano Jacqueline Horner Kwiatek. Ms. Kwiatek is a member of the world famous vocal quartet Anonymous 4 which has performed throughout the United States, Europe, and the Far East and recorded many award winning CDs including the Billboard chart-topping, “American Angels.” She has performed with numerous ensembles including, The Washington Bach Consort, the Bach Sinfonia, Bach Vespers at Holy Trinity Lutheran, The Folger Consort, Parthenia, to name a few.
Ms. Kwiatek teaches voice in New York City and in Washington D.C and is a member of the faculty at Trevor Conservatory of Music, the annual choral workshop Musica Deo Sacra in DC, and chairs numerous master classes and technique workshops all over the United States.
