Paradise: Instrumental Sonatas of Antonio Bertali CD Release Concert
ACRONYM (Albino-squirrel Consort Radiating from Oberlin via New York, Mostly) officially launches with a concert celebrating its first two CD releases on February 10, 2014 at 8 pm.
ACRONYM is devoted to resurrecting music of the past by giving modern premieres of long-lost works by forgotten composers. The twelve-member string band formed in Summer 2012 to create the first recording of the complete “Alphabet Sonatas” of Johann Pezel. Their second CD, instrumental sonatas by Antonio Bertali, was recorded a year later. Both discs will be released on Olde Focus Recordings, an early-music imprint of New Focus Recordings, in February 2014.
To celebrate the releases, ACRONYM will perform the complete Bertali CD, thirteen string sonatas for 2-8 players. Bertali, Kapellmeister in Vienna from 1649-1669, was a prolific composer, but few of his works were published and almost none survive. ACRONYM is pleased to have made the first recordings of six sonatas, and the first recordings in their present orchestrations of several more. Those pieces will all receive their modern premieres on February 10. For more information or to preview several of these sonatas, visit the ensemble at www.acronymensemble.com.
ACRONYM is Adriane Post; violin and viola Karina Schmitz; violin and viola Beth Wenstrom; violin Edwin Huizinga; violin Johanna Novom; violin Kyle Miller; viola Loren Ludwig; viola da gamba Kivie Cahn-Lipman; viola da gamba, violoncello, and lirone Paul Dwyer; violoncello Doug Balliett; viola da gamba and violone Simon Martyn-Ellis; theorbo and guitar Elliot Figg; harpsichord and organ
