Amuse Steven Fox, Music Director
“...this choir's real magic is in its delicate balance of serenity and intensity...a pure transparent tone and solid ensemble.”—Allan Kozinn, The New York Times
Amuse presents, Back to Basics, a program of medieval and Renaissance music including works by Hildegard, Josquin, Victoria, Guerrero, Dufay, Palestrina, Marenzio and Byrd's Mass for Three Voices.
Amuse is a 16-voice women’s ensemble founded by Lee Ryder in the fall of 2002 to bring music written for women’s voices to New York audiences. An often overlooked area of choral literature, this repertory comprises works by well-known composers throughout the last 12 centuries, including many new contemporary works for women’s voices composed in the last 50 years.
Since debuting in September 2003 with a concert featuring a world premiere, Amuse has consistently programmed contemporary works written expressly for women’s voices by 20th and 21st century composers. In the summer of 2004, Amuse participated in the world premiere of John Tavener’s The Veil of the Temple, the closing work of the Lincoln Center Festival.
Now in its seventh season, Amuse is an artist-in-residence at The Church of St. Ignatius of Antioch.
