Don't miss the most spectacular New York City performance in 2010 of this sublime masterpiece by baroque specialists, with an extraordinary complement of authentic 17th-century instruments and outstanding American singers. | VENICE TO VIENNA
An exploration of the birth of the violin sonata, from its origins as "modern music" in early seventeenth-century Venice to the fantastic and virtuosic inventions of the brilliant violinist-composers working in late 17th-century Vienna. The program will be performed by noted baroque violinist Robert Mealy, accompanied by Motomi Igarashi, violone and lirone; Daniel Swenberg, theorbo; Charles Weaver, lute and guitar; and Gwendolyn Toth, harpsichord, organ and director of ARTEK.

ARTEK is one of America's finest early music ensembles, performing on period instruments with historically-informed performance practice. Based in New York City and directed by Gwendolyn Toth, the ensemble has been in existence since 1986. Highlights of past performances include touring with the Mark Morris Dance Group from 1997-2002; performances of the theater show I'll Never See the Stars Again at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2005; Monteverdi's L'Orfeo in spring 2007 at Wall-to-Wall Opera at Symphony Space; and numerous performances at prestigious festivals including the Regensburg Alter Musik Festival in Germany and the Boston Early Music Festival.
