“The Air Viol”Violators

The world concert premiere of the English concertina (a.k.a. the “air viol”) substituting as a treble viol in repertoire of the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods, featuring spritely English country dances, consort music of Orlando Gibbons, William Lawes, and their contemporaries. Ruth Cunningham of Anonymous 4 will perform the extraordinary "Ye Sacred Muses," William Byrd's emotional deploration on the death of his teacher, Thomas Tallis.

Midtown Concerts sponsors lunchtime performances of music of the 18th century and earlier. Ensembles are chosen by a panel of early music specialists from the metropolitan area.
