Music Before 1800 presents the Choir of Corpus Christi Church in a festive concert for the Christmas season. Directed by Louise Basbas, the vocal ensemble and actress Frances Sternhagen perform “A Service of Advent Lessons and Carols,” music and readings for the early part of the season that foretell the birth of Jesus and honor the Virgin Mary. Music by Gallus, Byrd, Victoria, Guerrero, and others stands alongside 20th-century pieces by Harvey Burgett and Catherine Aks. The Choir of Corpus Christi Church is Music Before 1800’s resident ensemble. Besides singing in services at Corpus Christi Church, it has performed in notable events—the New York premiere of Pärt’s Passio, Mozart’s Requiem at the Mostly Mozart Festival, and for Lincoln Center’s New Vision series. Individually, the versatile performers sing in a variety of productions, from Broadway musicals to the Philip Glass Ensemble.
Annual concerts by the Choir of Corpus Christi Church attract an audience eager to hear the lively and multi-hued programs: “The thoughtfully assembled and beautifully sung programs by the church’s resident choir ... have always been among the highlights of the series. [They] sang this music with an admirable purity of tone and an easy, unforced sound” (The New York Times).
