SONGS FROM THEATRE WORKS OF BEN JONSON
Alfonso Ferrabosco the Younger (1575-1628) set to music the theatrical songs of his friend Ben Jonson, who wrote two flowery poetic tributes to the composer. Born to Italian parents in Greenwich, Ferrabosco was a noted musical figure at the court of James I, and music master to Prince Henry, to whom his 1609 song collection is dedicated. Included are the famous texts “Come my Celia” and “So Beauty on the water stood.”
Robert Jones (c. 1575-1615), man of the theatre, brought out a song collection the same year, with a preface explaining that the music contained therein came to him in a dream. Jones’ fifth book of songs contains a takeoff on his earlier “hit,” “Farewell dear love,” a song referenced in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night.
Now in its twelfth season, My Lord Chamberlain’s Consort specializes in the works of the Elizabethan lute book composers, arranged for lutes, harps, voices, viol, and cittern. The group has won praise for its refined ensemble singing, the variety of its arrangements, and its informed and entertaining approach to this repertoire.
