OCTOBER The Pergolesi Project: A Celebration of the Pergolesi 300th Anniversary Year Following the critically acclaimed March 2010 concert of Pergolesi’s music for the Lenten season, praised by The New York Times for “dramatic intensity,” The Pergolesi Project with Sinfonia New York opens our season in a weekend of two concerts.
Concert I Mezzo-soprano Meg Bragle performs virtuosic motets of heavenly splendor in the intimate sanctuary of the Church of the Epiphany.
Concert II Soprano Jessica Gould performs secular works of earthly fire in the auditorium of the Abigail Adams Smith House. The story of a journey to Styx and a triumph over death, the cantata Orfeo is among Pergolesi’s last works, composed while he lay dying of tuberculosis at the age of 26.

JANUARY
From Ghetto to Palazzo Vocal works of Salamone Rossi Hebreo
An evening of songs for one to 5 voices by the Jewish Italian composer Salamone Rossi, (c. 1570 – 1630), performed by members of the Clarion Music Society in the Beth-El Chapel of Temple Emanu-El. The concert will present both liturgical works in Hebrew composed for the synagogue and secular Italian madrigals composed for the court.
Presenting the sacred music for clandestine services and the madrigals penned in the idiom of the dominant culture, the program will bring to light Rossi’s connection to both the ghetto of his birth and the palazzo of his ambitions, reflecting upon the timeless balance between tradition and assimilation.
