The St. Joseph’s Singers Stephen Black, conductor
The St. Joseph's Singers, a chamber choir conducted by Stephen Black, will present the Johannes-Passion by Heinrich Schütz on Sunday, March 7. This entirely a cappella composition is one of three passions Schütz wrote late in his life, works which would later influence the great passion settings of J. S. Bach. The featured soloists are Kannan Vasudevan as narrator and Timothy J. Krol as Jesus. The St. Joseph’s Singers (SJS) is a chamber chorus based on the upper east side of Manhattan. The chorus was founded in the spring of 2004 by Stephen Black, a graduate of the Yale School of Music. The chorus performs both sacred and secular choral literature of all periods, with special emphasis on the music of J.S. Bach and contemporary composers. SJS’s November 2007 concert of new music was a critic’s choice in TimeOut New York magazine. The ensemble had the singular honor of performing a concert for Pope Benedict XVI, during his papal visit to the United States in April 2008.
