The Choir of the Church of Saint Luke in the Fields David Shuler, director
The Franco-Flemish composer Orlande de Lassus (1532-1594) is today considered to be the chief representative of the mature polyphonic style of the late Renaissance Netherlands school, and he was certainly the most famous and influential musician in Europe at the end of the 16th century. This concert features music that Lassus composed specifically for Holy Week, music that is rarely performed or recorded. The Lamentations of Jeremiah contain some of the most exquisite and heart-wrenchingly beautiful music that Lassus composed – Lassus at his most profound. The texts of the Tenebrae Responsories recount the events of Christ’s Passion, crucifixion and death. Lassus’s dramatic settings are remarkably vivid portrayals of these texts. The concert will also include Gregorian chants that would have traditionally used with the polyphonic works.
The Choir Melissa Fogarty, Marcia Young, sopranos Lisa Hindmarsh, Alexandra Sweeton, altos Ryland Angel, Todd Frizzell, Vladimir Maric, tenors Phillip Cheah, Michael Reder, basses
