Claudio Monteverdi published only two collections of sacred music in his lifetime. Among his sacred music, he is best known for his Vespers for the Blessed Virgin (1610), but his second collection, Selva Morale e Spirituale - Moral and Spiritual Forest, is far greater in scope.
TENET, the Virtuoso Vocal Ensemble led by soprano, Jolle Greenleaf* and Avi Stein, will continue their season as Ensemble-in-Residence at Saint Ignatius with a performance of compositions from this collection.
Selva Morale e Spirituale, published in 1641, is one of Monteverdi´s crowning achievements. It represents 30 years of work and contains nearly forty pieces including motets, psalms, mass settings, and madrigals. They vary in size from a small motet for solo voice to larger-scale settings.
*The New York Times review by critic, James Oestreich, reported on her directorship of the Green Mountain Project’s performance held in the city on January 3, 2010. Oestreich praised Ms. Greenleaf and the ensemble: "… Jolle Greenleaf, the group’s artistic director, also sang the lead soprano part beautifully… If this presentation was indeed the first of the year, that was the least of its distinctions. Far more important, it set a high standard for the many to follow.”
