The TRINITY CHOIR 2010 - 2011 Concert Season
Julian Wachner's debut season as principal conductor of the Trinity Choir and Trinity Baroque Orchestra will feature Handel's best-known oratorios, a masterpiece of sacred music, and a program of music from the Sarum Rite, guest conducted by New York City Opera's George Steel. The season concludes with a program of works by Elena Ruehr whose music Gramophone Magazine called "unspeakably gorgeous".
A rising star on national and international stages, Wachner has appeared with The Philadelphia Orchestra, Glimmerglass Opera, Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and Boston Pops Orchestra. He currently serves as Music Director of the GRAMMY® award-winning Washington Chorus, at the Kennedy Center, and is also associate professor of music at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University. An award-winning organist and improvisateur, Wachner's improvised finale at the Spoleto Festival USA at his solo recital led one reviewer to report that "this stupefying wizardry was the hit of the recital, and it had to be heard to be believed."
Wachner brings this high level of creativity and precision to the Choir's new season.
"Trinity Wall Street is committed to making its sacred space a major center for music in New York City," said Wachner. "This season is about reaching the community in lower Manhattan, Brooklyn, and beyond. We're pulling out all the stops, saying that world-class music making is here."
As part of its emphasis on community outreach, the Trinity Choir will also be performing free, preview concerts at 1pm at Trinity Church on most show days.
Concerts will be available for viewing via live webcast at www.trinitywallstreet.org.

MUSIC FROM THE SARUM RITE
George Steel, Guest Conductor
Thursday, February 3, 2011 1pm – Preview Concert (Free) 7:30pm – Concert
The pre-Reformation liturgy in England was the most elaborate, ornate, and theatrical of Western Christendom. The polyphonic choral embellishments to this gorgeous ceremonial -- too seldom performed because they are so carefully woven into the tapestry of the liturgy -- are some of the most exquisite beauties of any age. The Trinity Choir of Trinity Wall Street with New York City Opera’s George Steel, Guest Conductor, bring to light rare treasures, (decorated with pure, soaring soprano lines and rich choral textures) including Wylkinson's monumental (even Straussian) nine-part Salve Regina, works by Byrd and Tallis, and peerless masterpieces by John Sheppard.
