Holiday Light: A Celebration of Chanukah, Christmas and the Winter Solstice
The Western Wind
The Western Wind
The Western Wind, America’s longest-running professional a cappella vocal ensemble, will present its 10th annual “Holiday Light” concert on Dec. 12. “Holiday Light” is a unique program that celebrates Chanukah, Christmas and the Winter Solstice all in one festive evening of song.  This year, the concert will take place in the historic Church of St. Luke in the Fields, known for its intimate atmosphere and warm acoustics.

Christmas fare on “Holiday Light” ranges from the Appalachian carol “I Saw Three Ships” to music of the Renaissance, the Romantic era, and spirituals such as “Sweet Little Jesus Boy.”

Winter Solstice selections include the specially commissioned “Genesis Song,” written for The Western Wind by Charlie Morrow and based on the Polynesian Māori creation myth about the birth of the sun. Composed in 1982, the piece is being revived in honor of The Western Wind’s 40th anniversary.

Clever and amusing arrangements of such seasonal classics as “Winter Wonderland” and “Silver Bells” are also on the docket.

Finally, excerpts from “Chanukah in Story and Song,” the Western Wind’s CD and public radio show of the same name, will include Sephardic songs, the traditional Yiddish “Tsindt on Lichtelech” along with founding member William Zukof’s version of “We Come to You, Children.”

The concert marks soprano Michele Kennedy’s first “Holiday Light” with the ensemble. The other Western Wind singers are Laura Christian, soprano; William Zukof, countertenor; Todd Frizzell and Richard Slade, tenors; and Elliot Z. Levine, baritone.
