In History's Shadow: Forgotten Female Virtuosi

The stories are familiar, but the names are not: though Hélène Liebmann, Marianna von Auenbrugger, and Maria Szymanowska were celebrated in their day, history marginalized their music. Passionately devoted to telling the forgotten stories of classical music, cellist Juliana Soltis tours the globe as both soloist and chamber musician. Pianist and historical keyboardist Yi-heng Yang has been noted for “astonishing skill and vividness (The New York Times)” and “absolute mastery (Boston Musical Intelligencer).” Solo appearances have been at The Boston Early Music Festival, The Frederick Collection, The Finchcocks Collection, The Cobbe Collection, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, among other early music hotspots. She has also performed with members of the New York Philharmonic, the Netherlands Kamerorkest, and Apollo's Fire. Recordings include music of Mendelssohn on period instruments for the Olde Focus label, and 18th c. fortepiano and harpsichord duos with Rebecca Cypess on the Acis label.  Ms. Yang is on the piano faculty at The Juilliard School Evening Division and Pre-College, and teaches 19th c. performance practice at Rutgers University.

Midtown Concerts sponsors lunchtime performances of music of the 18th century and earlier. Ensembles are chosen by a panel of early music specialists from the metropolitan area.

Time: Thursdays, 1:15–2:00 pm
All concerts are free; no tickets or reservations are necessary.
