The Royal Strings

French Baroque featuring two violas da gamba, Adam Young and Matt Zucker

HoT Royal StringsWith a haunting tone and a range large enough to play bass lines as well as chords and treble melodies, it is a wonder the viola da gamba ever went away. At the turn of the 18th century the instrument was the favorite of French royalty, and its repertoire was perhaps the most sophisticated music of the age. Two gambas take center stage, and the splendor of the court shines through in this program of French delights featuring Matt Zucker and Adam Young on works by Marais as well as Couperin's "L'Imperiale" and his unpublished, and rarely performed "La Sultane”.

An Ode to Music: Handel, Hendrix, and a Very Special House

Featuring Handel’s Ode to St. Cecilia with soprano Clara Rottsolk

HoT OdeFor the last three decades of his life, Handel lived in the same house in London, where he composed a long string of masterpieces. Centuries later, in the late 1960's, the brilliant guitarist Jimi Hendrix also lived there. Baroque meets rock as we celebrate this odd coincidence with selections from "Ode to St. Cecilia", Handel's love letter to music, "Terpsichore", his love letter to dance, and a couple of songs by the man who reinvented the guitar. Is there any common ground between these very different geniuses? Come find out for yourself, as star soprano Clara Rottsolk joins House of Time to push baroque instruments in a new direction.

Angels and Demons

HoT Angels DemonsAngelic inspiration and demonic possession take turns driving some of the most dramatic works of the Baroque. Tartini claimed that his fiendish "Devil's Trill Sonata" was played to him by the devil himself sitting at the foot of his bed, while Biber's "Passacaglia" depicts the protection of a guardian angel. In Vivaldi's "Damnation Sonata" the oboe becomes a wayward soul dragged down to hell. Trios by Arcangelo Corelli, and Marin Marais, who "played like an angel" contrast with works by Antoine Forqueray, who "played like a demon". Don't miss House of Time's exploration of these mythic extremes in baroque music, capped by a special edition of La Folia (The Madness of Spain).
